چکیده

Unlike recent biomedical terminologies, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) does not state any explicit associations between a given disease and the corresponding anatomical structure(s). As a consequence, clinical repositories coded with ICD cannot be searched by anatomical structure. The objective of this work is to find associations between diseases from ICD10 and anatomical structures. Toward this end, we investigated three approaches (symbolic, lexical, and statistical) which exploit various features of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). We evaluated these approaches according to i) the consistency of resulting anatomical concepts with the high-level anatomical concept(s) identified for the chapter in which the disease is listed; and ii) the validity of resulting anatomical concepts assessed manually. We show that the symbolic approach is both the most productive and the most accurate approach.

GALEN Based Formal Representation of ICD10

OBJECTIVES The main objective is to create a knowledge-intensive coding support tool for the International Classification of Diseases (ICD10), which is based on formal representation of ICD10 categories. Beyond this task the resulting ontology could be reused in various ways. Decidability is an important issue for computer-assisted coding; consequently the ontology should be represented in desc...

Identifying and prioritizing lower value services from Dutch specialist guidelines and a comparison with the UK do-not-do list

BACKGROUND The term 'lower value services' concerns healthcare that is of little or no value to the patient and consequently should not be provided routinely, or not be provided at all. De-adoption of lower value care may occur through explicit recommendations in clinical guidelines. The present study aimed to generate a comprehensive list of lower value services for the Netherlands that assess...

Design principles of DOLCE-based formal representation of ICD10

The authors present the framework of formal representation of ICD10 based on DOLCE. The goal of the work is to represent the meaning of the categories of the classification systems based on a formal top-level ontology. The ICD categories are described in the space of atomic disease concepts, while the diseases themselves are defined on a pathological basis. The anatomical entities are taken fro...

Evaluating alignment quality between iconic language and reference terminologies using similarity metrics

BACKGROUND Visualization of Concepts in Medicine (VCM) is a compositional iconic language that aims to ease information retrieval in Electronic Health Records (EHR), clinical guidelines or other medical documents. Using VCM language in medical applications requires alignment with medical reference terminologies. Alignment from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus and International Classifi...
